About Our GCC Chapter

About Global China Connection Exeter

Just recently, GCC recognized Phillips Exeter Academy as its first high school chapter. Phillips Exeter Academy is a private, residential high school that has established worldwide precedence in education. With students from all corners of the globe, Exeter is devoted to developing programs that meet the abilities and passions of a very diverse group of high school students. Exeter is known for its rigorous academic curriculum, which is often compared to that of colleges. Students can immerse themselves in over 450 courses in 19 subject areas. Exeter boasts a unique method of teaching: the Harkness table. All classes are held around this oval table, which fits a maximum of 12 students and a teacher. The Harkness system is a discussion-based way of learning through the sharing and questioning of ideas without lectures.

Students at Exeter are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend assemblies, held three times a week. Each assembly features a guest speaker, who shares his or her experiences in a variety of subject areas. Past speakers have included Bob Woodward (journalist of the Watergate Scandal), Elizabeth Jones (former Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia, US State Department), and Peter Orszag (Former Director of the Office of Budget and Management). Assemblies encourage students to develop interests outside the classroom and expose them more to world issues.

One of our chapter missions at GCC Exeter is to educate high school students about the industries in China less often heard about. Green energy and sustainability in China are issues we find pertinent to students in the United States as they are beginning to consider the potentials of countries other than their own. We aim to spread knowledge on this topic of global importance while encouraging discussion between students at Exeter and experts in their respective fields; we hope to promote relationships that are not often possible in a classroom environment.
